Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: An Analysis.

This action from the Democratic National Committee to withhold the publication regarding its own post-election analysis on the 2024 election appears shocking however not surprising. Resistant to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus behaves more like a PR firm rather than a political organization devoted to cultivating local power for winning elections.

A Climate That Avoids Dissent

Reluctant to challenge the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has remained within the Biden-Harris shadow throughout this past year. Releasing an official autopsy might have shown that the leadership actually want to encourage honest conversation regarding the strategic failures which allowed Donald Trump to become president again. However, the DNC is proceeding as if there is little to be learned from the electoral catastrophe of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," a justification that has been offered to justify concealing the analysis.

Critical Problems an Analysis Might Have Examined

Any valuable post-mortem worth its salt would not dodge key points of failure. These include:

  • Electoral Alienation: The loss among millions of voters who supported the party's candidate in 2020 became a critical factor during the tight 2024 election.
  • The Insistence to Run: The unwavering insistence by the incumbent to seek re-election, alongside a last-minute exit, is seen by some as denying Democratic voters of a genuine choice.
  • Abandoning the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the electoral effort is criticized for bowing to elite contributors and not managing to address the role of big business.
  • A Gaza Impact: The failure to adjust a policy position regarding the situation in Gaza is cited as driving away many voters, particularly among youth voters, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Young Voter Support: Research demonstrates a major decrease in support for the party among the youth electorate.

A History Avoiding Accountability

This refusal fits a recurring tendency of sidestepping hard truths. It recalls a situation in which nearly all elected Democrat in Congress went along with an incumbent's determination to running for re-election right up until a poor public debate performance led to a reversal.

Concurrently, overwhelming numbers of the electorate had been consistently telling pollsters that they opposed the incumbent to seek re-election.

Financial Questions

A substantive report might also investigate issues regarding campaign spending, such as what sums were directed to insider consultants as well as media firms during an electoral effort that managed to spend an enormous amount during the general election.

The Broader Problem

Fundamentally, the secrecy of the official autopsy is symptomatic of an allegiance to the established hierarchy responsible for a losing electoral effort. The message for rank-and-file members – which includes millions of small donors – is that they cannot have a right to see the lessons the leadership say they discovered from a report drawing from conversations with insiders.

An organization unwilling to publicly examine where it went wrong finds it difficult to break free from the rut that proved so advantageous to the winning candidate.
